The outside of the dome models, as you may have guessed, the planet. However, this rendition of Earth seeks to highlight the immediate and concerning impacts of our warming planet. Modeled off a heat map, the outside of the dome is lightly painted blue to represent the ocean, specifically how heat will sap away its color—the wildlife, reef systems, and natural amenities—as global warming worsens. The land on the dome models how heat manifests on different contents, warmer near the equator—as depicted in red paint—and radiating out into softer—yet still alarming—yellows closer to the poles.

As global warming progresses with no sign of slowing and an impossibility of reverting to original conditions, the 1995 heat wave will become a norm. The ramifications of heat go beyond a sweatier day—workers who spend their days outside, flora of all kinds, and the animals that inhabit them will increasingly face deadly consequences. As Jeff Goodell frames it in his book The Heat Will Kill You First, we will soon be facing a “temperature apartheid” in which the select few with resources to remain cool will be able to do so while their neighbors pass out from heat stroke, cardiac arrest, and other heat-enhanced maladies. While we can’t reverse the damage of the past, immediate action can slow and, if extremely effective, stop the most immediate dangers a heating planet possesses.
